How to Crochet a ScentZ Sunflower Car Hanger
Guys… this project has been on my list for so long… I’m embarrassed to say HOW long!! And I really don’t know why it took me so long to just sit down and DO it! Once I did, it came together so quickly and easily. I am so thrilled to finally be able to share this tutorial of how to crochet a ScentZ Sunflower car hanger with you.
What is a ScentZ car hanger? Let’s go backwards. A “Car Hanger” is something you hang on your rear view mirror; usually something pretty to look at. Me being me, who likes things to be pretty and functional, decided to create something pretty to hold the car fragrance refills from Bath and Body Works. A “ScentZ” is a word play on my name: the WhimZ B.
When this idea first came to me, I knew a sunflower had to be the very first one… they are my favorite!
This sunflower pattern is based on my FREE Tiny Sunflower Applique pattern.
This little ScentZ sunflower car hanger is perfect to make for yourself, gifts for someone else, or market makes!
Are you ready to make one? This pattern is fairly easy and I think even a beginner can tackle it. You will make 2 centers with petals, make the hanger, sew them together, and voila! You now have a gorgeous sunflower to admire inside your vehicle or out!

Special Stitches
This pattern is made in the round using some special stitches: the Bobble Stitch and a Picot Stitch. They made sound intimidating, but I can hopefully explain them to make them less scary!
There are different ways to make bobble stitches, and I make them a certain way in this pattern… so be sure to read the following thoroughly.
3DC Bobble Stitch (will be referred to in the rest of this pattern as “bobble” )
This stich is created by making a set of 3 incomplete double crochets in the same stitch, then drawing a loop through all 4 loops left on the hook and locking it in with a sc in the next stitch. Thank you to One Dog Woof for sharing this technique on YouTube!
Yarn Over (YO) and insert hook into stitch. YO and pull through 2 loops like you are making a Double Crochet (DC) You now have 2 loops on hook. Next, YO and pull through 2 loops again like you are making another DC (3 loops on hook). YO and pull through 2 loops once more (4 loops on hook). Lastly, YO and pull through all 4 loops. Normally when making a bobble st, you would now chain (ch) 1 to lock it in, but we are going to do it differently. Start a Single Crochet (SC) in the next stitch (st). Before finishing it, you are going to pop that bobble stitch to the front. Then pull your hook with loops on it out a bit and \”hop\” over the bobble. Finish the SC behind the bobble. This will keep all your bobble stitches in the front of your work. Pull the SC tight behind the bobble.
Picot Stitch (will be referred to in the rest of this pattern as “picot”)
A picot stitch creates a “point” on top of cluster of stitches. For this pattern, you will be making a picot st on top of a Triple Crochet Stitch (TC).
TC. Ch3. Insert hook into 3rd ch from hook and make a Slip Stich (SlSt). Continue pattern.

The Crocheted Sunflower Car Hanger Pattern
CENTER
R1: With Center, make a Magic Ring with a 2″ tail. Make 6 SC in the MR. Join with a SlSt to the 1st SC (6 SC)
R2: Ch1 and SC into the same st and also a bobble. (REMEMBER: Do NOT lock it in at this point). SC in next st (REMEMBER to pop the bobble forward and finish off the SC in the behind the bobble). In the same st as the SC, make another bobble. Continue around making 1SC and 1 bobble in each st. Complete round by locking in the bobble with a SlS in the 1st SC. (6 bobbles and 6 SC)
R3: Ch1 and SC INCREASE (two SC in the same st) into the same st. SC INC in each st around. Join to first SC with a SlST (24 SC)
R4: Ch1 and SC in the same st. (In this round we will not be making the bobble and SC in the same st.) In the next st, make a bobble. Continue this pattern around for a total of 12 bobbles. Complete round by locking in the bobble with a SlS in the 1st SC. *** Fasten Off (FO) by weaving tail through the back of the center towards the MR tail. Tie tails together in 2 double knots. Trim.
*** IMPORTANT!! Before finishing the first Center piece, make sure that it is slightly bigger than the refill disk. If not, you will need to either loosen your tension or go up a hook size and remake your center.
PETALS:
You will be working the petals onto each center piece separately.
R1: With Petals, make a Slip Knot with a 2\” tail. Bring into any st on the center piece. Ch1 and SC into the same st. SC into the next 23. Join to first SC with a SlSt. (24 sts)
R2: Ch. 1 and SC into the same st. In next st you will make your first petal (2 DC, TC, Picot, TC, DC, Ch2, SlSt) SC in next st. Continue this pattern around the center. SlSt into first SC from the backside by pulling your loop out a bit and removing your hook. Flip flower over and insert hook into that 1st SC from the backside. Next, grab your loop with your hook, and pull it through the SC while removing the slack. FO first flower, but not the second. (12 petals)
HANGER and ASSEMBLY:
While you are still working on your 2nd flower, Ch 50. Sl St to the back of the flower 3 petals over to the left.
IMPORTANT!!! At this point, you can take it out to your vehicle and make sure it will fit over your rear view mirror (it should!) If it is too short, simply add more chs until it fits and then Sl St again. Ch1 and FO leaving a LONG tail to sew flowers together
Place flowers back to back, lining up petals. Thread tail into needle and bring it to the outside of your work. Sew flowers together between hanger sides, making a pocket opening in the middle of the hanger. Make sure to sew it around R1 of petals.
***IMPORTANT!! At this point, make sure that your refill disk will fit into the pocket. If not, remove sts until it does and then continue the pattern.
Once you’re sure your pocket opening is big enough for your refill disk, bring the tail to the inside of the pocket and then FO, leaving a tail to tie together with the beginning tail. Tie in multiple double knots.
That’s it!
Now just open up your scent refill and pop it into the pocket. Then hang your sunflower over your rear view mirror and enjoy your crocheted sunflower car hanger!
